We have two classes of membership in the Association, Active membership and Associate membership.
All bargaining unit members, as determined by the certification order of the Public Employment Relations Board, are eligible for Active membership. Bargaining unit members are not eligible for an Associate membership. Active members are eligible to participate in all affairs of the Association.
Public employees of the City of Des Moines who are not in the bargaining unit represented by the Municipal Employees Association are eligible for Associate membership. Public employees who are not in the bargaining unit are not eligible for Active membership. Associate members are not eligible to hold office in the Association. Associate members may receive the benefits of membership in the Association except for collective bargaining. The prohibition on collective bargaining shall include, but not be limited to, participating in strategy sessions of the Association, serving on the negotiation or grievance committee of the Association, and voting on ratification of the collective bargaining agreement.
